Invitation to pre-defence: Emil Lauge Christensen

Provisional title: "Perceptions and Receptions of Papal Legates"

05.02.2018 kl. 13.00 - 15.00

Pre-defence by Emil Lauge Christensen

During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the papacy increasingly asserted and argued pre-eminent authority and jurisdiction in spiritual and (to a certain extent) in temporal affairs. In order to implement its assertions, the popes’ employed a variety of tools; one of the most important instruments was the use of legates (deputies). Dispatched from the pope’s side (a latere), the most powerful type of papal legates travelled from Rome to all regions of Christendom, expecting to be received as though ‘St Peter were present’ (beati Petri Presentiam) or even as ‘legate of the apostolic See, nay more of Christ’ (legatum sedis apostolicae imo Christi). Using England as a case, the study investigates the perception of these figures (deputies of St Peter and Christ through the pope) outside the papal curia, placing special emphasis on accounts of adventus-ceremonies. These ceremonies were employed in order to receive a ruler, and the description of such ceremonial welcomes of papal legates in contemporary sources (chiefly chronicles and historical works) tells us about perceptions of – and attitudes to – the papacy and its claims.

NB! The pre-defence will be held in Danish.
